Little Kids’ First Big Book of the Ocean

What made this book so special? Was it the fact he selected it? Or was there something that was so appealing about it that made him select it in the first place? Whatever the reason, it was this book which got us started and it is clearly a very accessible publication.

Published by National Geographic Kids, this is a great book for kids to read out. It has lots of salient facts laid out in bite-sized chunks. Specialist language explained or, when needed, written out phonetically, so that the child can feel like they are progressing quickly and can do this relatively independently. There are plenty of simpler words and sentences from them to build up from.

The photography is gorgeous, each animal is presented with a compelling set of images which shows their extraordinary features. Each creature is brought to life whether its gigantic luminescent jellyfish through or super cute baby sea otters tangled up in kelp cuddling their parents. We’d give this book five stars!
